How much does it cost?

All Austin No Kidding events are free. You pay for any food you eat or tickets you purchase, but there are no membership fees.
The web site and mail box are paid for by voluntary donation. Every few years there will be a "Rent Party" where you can donate some money if you wish. There are no ANK bank accounts or registers. Donated funds are sent immediately to the ISP.

My children are grown/I have a step-child/I am a non-custodial parent. Can I still join?

No. Austin No Kidding is for people who have never been parents. People who chose never to have children, and people who cannot have children and do not wish to adopt, are welcome.
Members who later choose to have children leave the organization but are not ostracized or ridiculed for their choice. ANK exists because we believe in the right to make the your own choice..

How do I attend an event?

The calendar http://www.austinokidding.com/calendar.php has all the event information you need. Sometimes you will be asked to RSVP for directions, and sometimes you need to RSVP so we can make a restaurant reservation or other necessary arrangements.
If the event requires an RSVP, please make sure you respond by the requested date. If you send an RSVP and then discover you can't attend the event, please send a second email to let us know.

What is the Announcements List?

The Announcements list is used to notify subscribers of upcoming calendar events. The list is not used for conversation, though once or twice a year it may be used to send information our members need to know.
We recommend that all our members receive ANK! announcements, and it's easy to subscribe.

What is the Enthusiasts List?

The Enthusiasts list is used for spontaneous events (I'm going to see the 4:15 showing of Spiderman at the Alamo South this Sunday; who wants to come along?) and potential events (Would anyone be interested in a field trip to Fiesta Texas this fall?). It is generally not used for conversation.

Is there a mailing list for general conversation?

ANK! is primarily a social get-together group, so we like to encourage our general conversation to be over dinner, etc. Much more fun than email.

Who's in charge?

ANK! is run by the members.
There is a small group of worker bees who help with administrative duties (such as the webmaster), answer email enquiries and put events on the calendar, but that's all.

I have a great idea for an event! How do I get an event on the Calendar?

If your event is spontaneous (Hey, who wants to go see Spider-man this weekend?), just send it to the Enthusiasts list (see What is the Enthusiasts List?).
But if you want to do a bigger event or party, plan out the basics (where will you host it? what would you like guests to bring? what dates work best for you? do you require an RSVP?) and send it to info@austinnokidding.com. The calendar keepers will work with you to make sure your event doesn't get overrun by an existing one, and they'll put it on the web site calendar.
If you'd like to host an event but you want or need a little extra assistance, don't hesitate to ask! Send an email to Info@austinnokidding.com.
Some of our best events started as someone having an idea, asking if anyone else is interested and then it progressed into a really fun event. That how we ended doing wine-tasting's, a party to celebrate Star-Trek's 40th anniversary and a late summer pool party.

Do you not like children?

Some of our members adore children, and some are not so fond of them. We don't require a stance, political or otherwise, for membership in the group. Only a willingness to get out and have fun!

Do you talk about children?

Generally, no. The subject isn't taboo, but it just doesn't come up.
You are not expected to explain your childfree status, your feelings toward children, or your politics. If someone asks you what you did over the holidays and you say, "I spent it playing soccer with my brother and his kids", you won't be chased out of the room.
We do talk about everything else!

About the Monthly Activity "Cinema Club"

"Cinema Club" is one of our monthly activities where we see a different movie, usually the last matinee on the first Sunday of each month.
A brief description can be found on our monthly activities page: http://www.austinnokidding.com/monthly_events.htm#CinemaClub

How do you decide which movie to go and see?

Like everything else in Austin Nokidding! its the members who decide.
If you are subscribed to receive the Austin Nokidding announcements, then 2 weeks before the event a notice is sent out asking for movie suggestions.
To ensure a wide pool of choices, a movie cannot be nominated for more than one month.
Once we have movie nominations, we send out a announcement 1 week before, listing the nominations and asking for members to vote on what movie they would like to see and where?
Voting closes the Wednesday night before the event, and the movie with the most votes is the one we will go and see.

Which Cinema do you normally go to?

There is no one cinema we go to, and sometimes our choice of cinema is limited to where the months "Cinema Club" movie is actually showing. If, when you vote for a movie, you indicate where you would like to see the movie, either by general area, or specific cinema, then based on the preference of those who voted, we will select a cinema and time that best suits.

Should I rsvp if I plan on coming to the next Cinema Club activity?

RSVP's for "Cinema Club" are not absolutely required, but we do ask for them so that we know how many to look for in the lobby, and if it is a large group, try and hold a block of seats in the cinema so that we can all sit together.

About the Monthly Activity "Restaurant Explorers"

"Restaurant Explorers" is one of our monthly activities where we dine at a different restaurant each month, usually on the fourth Saturday of each month.
A brief description and list of past "explores" can be found on our monthly activities page: http://www.austinnokidding.com/Restaurant.htm

How do you decide which Restaurant to visit?

All of our "Restaurant explores" are nominated by the members, either because a member has been to that restaurant and wants their ANK! friends to enjoy it as well, or a member has heard of a restaurant and interested in visiting it with their ANK! friends.
The only criteria is that the establishment we visit is primarily a restaurant and not somewhere that "also serves food"

What are the current restaurant suggestions?

We have a long list of suggestions, and we will get around to dining at them all.
The list can be found at: http://www.austinnokidding.com/re_list.htm

How do I propose a restaurant for us to "explore"?

Because there are so many restaurants in Austin, we rely upon our members to make suggestions, so if there is a restaurant you would like us to visit, and it is not on our upcoming list, then let us know and we'll add it.

Should I rsvp if I plan on coming to the next Restaurant Explorers activity?

Yes. While most monthly events do not require an RSVP, since Restaurant Explorers is a popular activity we require an RSVP if you plan on attending. Restaurant Explorers is a very popular event, often with over 20 people attending. Many of the restaurants we explore are small private establishments and it is often difficult to try and accommodate such a large group without prior notice.
When we know how many are going to attend, we then contact the restaurant and book seating for the group. Sometimes we are offered a private dining area at no extra cost.

Are you affiliated with the international NoKidding! group?

No, we are an independent organization. Members from any childfree group, independent or affiliated, are always welcome to visit.
